Descripció
Cos de fins a 15 mm de llarg, de color marró groguenc, amb taques i punts de color marró fosc. El dors és de color marró groguenc pàl·lid, amb taques difuses i punts de marró més fosc, tot esquitxat de diminuts punts blancs. La resta de el cos és de color blanc gairebé transparent, amb algunes petites taques marrons al cap i el marge de el peu, barrejades amb nombrosos punts blancs opacs. El dors està deprimit i és lleugerament rugós, mentre que els costats són llisos i còncaus. Els rinòfors són arrugats i nodulosos. Els cerata són oval·lats, alguns tenen forma de pera invertida, amb les puntes romes i gairebé incolores, i tota la seva superfície està coberta de tubercles dispersos puntejats de blanc. Els cerata creixen al llarg dels marges del notus en una dotzena de files transversals de tres papil·les cadascuna, molt juntes a la base, les més interiors són grans i inflades, mentre que les exteriors són molt petites. Hi ha dos cerata més grans que la resta que se situen a la part posterior, a prop de la cua. També hi ha 4 grans cerata tubercul·lats, de forma el·líptica, que envolten el cap per davant dels rinòfors. Tots els cerata, excepte els que estan davant dels rinòfors, mostren un diverticle de la glàndula digestiva groguenca amb marges ondulats al seu interior. El vel oral és petit i partit, i cobreix dos tentacles orals cilíndrics situats a banda i banda de la boca. El peu està profundament dividit i partit, amb els costats arrodonits i estrenyent-se cap enrere per formar una cua fina. Anus prominent ubicat en la part posterior del dors.

Biologia
L’exemplar original utilitzat per a la seva descripció va ser trobat per una draga de poca fondària a Malahide, Dublín, Irlanda, unit a una esponja marina Halichondria panicea. L’animal desprèn els cerata més grans quan està estressat, que son substituits ràpidament sense efectes adversos aparents per a l’animal.

Etimologia

  • Proctonotus. Del grec “proktos”, anus i “noton”, dors, indicant que té l’anus en posició dorsal.
  • Mucroniferus. Del llatí “mucron”, mucró (una punta corta, més o menys aguda i ben diferenciada que acaba abruptament) i “fero”, portar, carregar.

Distribució
Espècie eminentment atlàntica i extremadament rara, només ha estat citada a Malahide Bay, Irlanda (Alder & Hancock, 1844), a Clyde Bay (Thompson & Brown, 1984), a Loch Torridon, Escòcia (foto superior), a Vikaneset, Kristiansund, Noruega (Christian Skauge, 2007 in Sea Slug Forum) i a la costa atlàntica francesa a Saint Vaast la Hougue (Quatrefages, 1844) i Roscoff (Vayssière, 1913). La cita de Fez (1974) a les costes de Finisterre (Galícia, Espanya) és molt probablement una confusió ja que al·ludeix a una cita de Vayssière a Roscoff (Finistère, França).
