Bulloidea are a superfamily of marine heterobranch gastropod molluscs that includes species primarily known for their globular shells, which are often inflated and have a wide aperture. Among their most characteristic representatives are species of the genus Bulla, which gives the group its name and has rounded shells with a very low spire. Although traditionally associated with so-called bubble snails, these gastropods form a group with distinctive anatomical and ecological characteristics within the diversity of heterobranchs.<\/p>\n

Bulloidea mainly inhabit shallow marine waters, where they occur on sandy or muddy bottoms, among algae and in seagrass meadows. Many species are associated with soft sediments, where they can move around and feed on the resources available in the substrate. Their often inconspicuous colouration and lifestyle mean that they can easily go unnoticed, although they may be relatively abundant in certain environments.<\/p>\n

One of the group’s most distinctive features is its shell, which is generally robust and rounded and can protect much of the animal’s body. The spire is usually very low and may be partly concealed by the more developed whorls, while the aperture is wide enough to allow the foot to extend. In many species, the body has a well-developed cephalic shield, a structure that facilitates movement over the sediment and is characteristic of several groups of heterobranch gastropods with benthic lifestyles.<\/p>\n

The diet of Bulloidea is related to the resources available on the seabed. Representatives of the genus Bulla, for example, feed mainly on algae and organic material associated with the substrate. This feeding strategy contributes to the trophic interactions within benthic communities and reflects the specialisation of these animals in coastal environments where resources are readily available.<\/p>\n

Although shell shape makes many members of the group recognisable, accurate species identification may require examination of additional morphological details. Differences in shell ornamentation, proportions and other anatomical characteristics, complemented by molecular data, help clarify the relationships between different lineages and their position within the heterobranchs.<\/p>\n

Bulloidea provide an interesting example of the diversity of shelled marine gastropods and the adaptations they have developed for life on soft substrates. Although they are often less familiar than nudibranchs and other sea slugs, their role in benthic communities and their distinctive morphology make them a relevant group for understanding the biodiversity of coastal ecosystems.<\/p>\n
