Sea slugs exhibit a wide diversity of reproductive behaviours and strategies adapted to their different habitats and lifestyles. Although many species share reproductive characteristics, there is no single reproductive pattern that applies to all groups.<\/p>\n

Hermaphroditism and mating<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Most nudibranchs are simultaneous hermaphrodites, meaning that each individual possesses functional male and female reproductive systems. This characteristic is also common in other groups of sea slugs. However, having both sexes does not necessarily mean that they can reproduce through self-fertilisation. In many species, reproduction usually involves the exchange of sperm between two individuals (Pola & Gonz\u00e1lez-Duarte, 2008; Taraporevala et al., 2022).<\/p>\n

During mating, the animals adopt a position that allows sperm to be transferred to their partner’s reproductive system. In many nudibranchs, this exchange is reciprocal, so that both individuals can act simultaneously as sperm donors and recipients. In other groups, however, different strategies have been observed, such as unilateral sperm transfer or hypodermic insemination, in which sperm is introduced through the body wall of the partner (Anthes & Michiels, 2007).<\/p>\n

Fertilisation is generally internal. Sperm may be stored within the reproductive system and used later to fertilise the eggs. This allows egg laying to occur after mating, without the partner needing to remain present.<\/p>\n

Egg masses<\/strong><\/h4>\n

After fertilisation, the eggs are laid outside the body, generally enclosed in capsules and embedded in a gelatinous matrix that helps protect the embryos. The shape and structure of egg masses vary considerably among species and can be useful for identification.<\/p>\n

Many nudibranchs lay their eggs in gelatinous ribbons, often coiled into a spiral and attached to the substrate. These ribbons may contain numerous capsules, each holding one or several embryos, depending on the species. Egg masses are commonly found on rocks, algae, sessile organisms and other submerged surfaces.<\/p>\n

Other sea slugs produce different types of egg masses. Sea hares, for example, may lay long, gelatinous strings containing thousands of eggs. The size of the egg mass, the number of eggs and their individual size vary according to the species and its reproductive strategy. In general, species that produce planktotrophic larvae, which feed during development, tend to invest in large numbers of relatively small eggs, whereas species that produce more developed offspring often invest more resources in each embryo (Krug et al., 2015).<\/p>\n

From embryonic development to the larva<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Once laid, the embryos develop inside their capsules. During this process, they pass through several stages of embryonic development and, in many species, form a veliger larva before hatching.<\/p>\n

The veliger larva has a ciliated structure called the velum, which enables it to swim and generate water currents. In many species, it also retains a small larval shell, which is lost during metamorphosis in lineages of sea slugs that lack a shell as adults.<\/p>\n

In species with planktotrophic development, larvae spend a period in the plankton and feed on particles or microorganisms, such as microalgae. During this stage, they may be transported by ocean currents, favouring dispersal and the colonisation of new habitats.<\/p>\n

The duration of the planktonic stage varies according to the species and environmental conditions. Before settling on the seabed, some larvae respond to chemical cues associated with the substrate or with organisms that will constitute their future food. Settlement is followed by metamorphosis, during which the larva transforms into a juvenile with the body organisation characteristic of the adult species.<\/p>\n

Direct development and other strategies<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Not all sea slugs pass through a free-living planktonic stage. In species with lecithotrophic development, the embryo relies mainly on the nutritional reserves of the egg yolk, and the larval stage may be short and non-feeding. In some cases, development and metamorphosis are completed inside the egg capsule, so that a juvenile hatches directly, without a free-living planktonic stage.<\/p>\n

These strategies generally involve differences in potential dispersal and reproductive investment. Planktotrophic larvae may disperse widely, whereas direct development tends to restrict the initial dispersal of offspring. However, the relationship between developmental mode and effective dispersal also depends on ocean currents, species ecology and survival conditions (Krug et al., 2015).<\/p>\n

Variations in larval development within a single species have also been documented in some sacoglossans. This phenomenon, known as poecilogony<\/em>, shows that reproductive strategies can be more flexible than a single life-cycle model might suggest.<\/p>\n

Overall, sea slug reproduction combines different mating systems, egg-laying patterns and modes of embryonic and larval development. This diversity influences dispersal, the colonisation of new habitats and population survival, making reproduction one of the most interesting aspects of the biology of these gastropods.<\/p>\n
