Esta especie encabezaba una de las polémicas más conocidas en el mundo de los opistobranquios. Existe un grupo de especialistas que afirmaban que
Felimare tricolor se trataba de una especie diferente sin discusión, mientras que otros afirmaban que se trataba de
Felimare midatlantica (Gosliner, 1990). A raíz del trabajo (Furfaro et al., 2016) puede concluirse que
Felimare midatlantica es en realidad
F. tricolor . Tanto en la base de datos WoRMS como en CLEMAM indican
F. tricolor como especie válida y
F. midatlantica como sinónima.

Descripción
Los animales de esta especie suelen medir entre 20 y 30 mm de longitud. Su cuerpo es bastante estilizado, algo más ancho en su zona anterior y de coloración azulada. El borde del manto es amarillo y en el centro del dorso hay una banda longitudinal que va desde la zona interrrinofórica hasta la vaina branquial, rodea a ésta y continúa por detrás hasta cerca del borde posterior del manto. La banda medio dorsal es blanquecina en los ejemplares más pequeños y luego se va amarilleando progresivamente. A ambos lados de la banda amarilla central del dorso suele haber manchas azul turquesa redondeadas o alargadas y que aparecen perfectamente alineadas. En los flancos del cuerpo hay también una banda longitudinal blanquecina o amarillenta, que rodea a la papila genital formando un anillo alrededor de ella. Posteriormente, las dos bandas laterales se unen en la cola en forma de una banda amarilla medio dorsal. Ortea et al. (1996) indican la variabilidad cromática de esta especie según los ejemplares y su tamaño. Los rinóforos tienen la zona laminar de color azul muy oscuro, el ápice es algo más claro, al igual que la zona basal sin láminas; tienen unas 20-25 laminillas. La vaina rinofórica es elevada y de borde liso. La branquia está constituida por 8-10 hojas branquiales de color azul oscuro con el raquis amarillento o blanquecino; las laminillas de cada hoja branquial son semitransparentes y alternativamente grandes y pequeñas. El pie es estrecho y truncado anteriormente, la boca tiene dos palpos orales cortos y anchos.
Biología
Esta especie es relativamente frecuente por todo el litoral mediterráneo y atlántico europeo, viviendo desde la zona intermareal hasta más de 100 m de profundidad. Prefiere substratos rocosos como paredes verticales con abundancia de algas e invertebrados o bien bajo piedras. Los ejemplares de esta especie tienen de 2 a 5 glándulas defensivas (MDF´s) de tipo 3 en el borde posterior del manto y ocasionalmente también en el borde anterior, a la altura de los rinóforos (García-Gómez et al. 1991; Wägele et al. 2006). De su cuerpo se han aislado metabolitos secundarios del tipo de los sesquiterpenoides como la longifolina, extraídos de su especie alimento, la esponja del género Dysidea (D. avara, D. fragilis ) y que tienen una clara misión defensiva cuando son expulsados al exterior (Àvila, 1993; Fontana et al,. 1993). Su puesta es una cinta enrollada en una espiral de 3 vueltas y de unos 2 mm de altura que contiene huevos blancos de unas 90 micras de diámetro (Ortea et al. 1996).

Distribución
Se trata de una especie europea que ha sido registrada desde las costas atlánticas de Francia hasta el Mediterráneo occidental, también en las Azores, Madeira y las Islas Canarias. Sin embargo como ha sido confundida repetidamente con otras especies de Felimare azules (F. villafanca, F. fontandraui, F. orsinii ) es posible que su distribución geográfica sea más amplia. En la Península Ibérica se ha citado en todas sus zonas costeras (Cervera et al,. 2004) y en Catalunya en numerosas localidades de la Costa Brava, Canet de Mar, Mataró y Port de l´Estany (Tarragona).
