Su nombre se refiere a tener el cuerpo protegido por una concha cartilaginosa o theca (caja en griego). Como una adaptaci\u00f3n a la vida pel\u00e1gica, los pseudothecosomata tienen expansiones del pi\u00e9 que les permiten usarlas como aletas natatorias. Por esta raz\u00f3n, com\u00fanmente se llaman mariposas de mar.<\/p>\n<p>La concha de consistencia cartilaginosa se llama pseudoconcha y se considera interna porque est\u00e1 cubierta por un fino epitelio; este pseudoconcha es semitransparente y tiene una forma curva que permite acomodar la masa visceral del animal. Algunas especies de la familia Desmopteridae carecen de cualquier tipo de concha.<\/p>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: center;\"><div id=\"featured-img-id\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/opistobranquis.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/corolla-spectabilis.jpg?w=900&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Corolla spectabilis\" \/><\/div><em>Corolla spectabilis<\/em>, un\u00a0<em>Pseudothecosomata<\/em> t\u00edpico<\/h6>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>La cabeza de los pseudotecosomata tiene un par de tent\u00e1culos, llamados rin\u00f3foros, con fines olfativos. La cavidad del manto est\u00e1 bien desarrollada en este grupo, pero solo unas pocas especies, como el g\u00e9nero <em>Peracle<\/em>, tienen branquias. Otras especies pueden respirar a trav\u00e9s del epitelio del manto. La r\u00e1dula tiene de 3 a 5 dientes por fila y el tracto digestivo tiene alg\u00fan tipo de placas masticatorias para moler los alimentos que ingieren.<\/p>\n<p>Los pseudotecosomados se alimentan de plancton capturado con el siguiente m\u00e9todo: el epitelio del manto y las aletas secretan una gran cantidad de moco, formando una extensa red mucosa de hasta 2 m de largo flotando alrededor del animal, las part\u00edculas de alimento son retenidas en esta red y el animal simplemente recolecta y traga la red mucosa de vez en cuando.<\/p>\n<p>Los pseudotecosomados, como muchas especies de plancton marino, generalmente tienen una amplia distribuci\u00f3n geogr\u00e1fica que depende en gran medida de las corrientes oce\u00e1nicas. Se pueden encontrar desde aguas polares hasta mares tropicales, pero hay cambios frecuentes en el tama\u00f1o y la morfolog\u00eda de muchas especies relacionadas con su ubicaci\u00f3n geogr\u00e1fica, lo que ha llevado a considerar formas o subespecies.
