Nota taxonómica: Descrita originalmente en la literatura como Dolabrifera dolabrifera (Rang, 1828), una serie de estudios moleculares y morfológicos de especímenes recolectados recientemente, así como una revisión de la literatura y del especimen tipo, indican que Dolabrifera dolabrifera es un complejo de cinco especies de taxones genéticamente diferentes. El nombre Dolabrifera dolabrifera se conserva para la especie hallada en el Indo-Pacífico tropical. Dolabrifera nicaraguana es endémica del Pacífico Oriental. Dolabrifera ascifera, D. virens y esta especie Dolabrifera edmundsi n. sp. están restringidas al Atlántico tropical, con rangos de distribución parcialmente superpuestos en la región del Caribe y en Santa Elena. La especie del Pacífico templado Dolabrifera brazieri también es distinta y endémica en las regiones templadas del sureste de Australia y Nueva Zelanda. Estas especies de Dolabrifera constituyen linajes altamente divergentes y la mayoría contienen características anatómicas internas únicas, particularmente en la morfología reproductiva masculina y la forma de la concha interna, lo que hace que sean relativamente fáciles de identificar mediante disección. Sin embargo, externamente todas estas especies son extremadamente variables en su patrón cromático y morfología, por lo que son prácticamente indistinguibles “de visu”, lo que es particularmente problemático en el océano Atlántico donde hay tres especies simpátricas en el Mar Caribe. • Edmundsi. En honor de Malcolm Edmunds, distinguido taxonomista inglés especializado en opistobranquios, tristemente fallecido en enero de 2017.
