Descripción
Los ejemplares mediterráneos de esta especie suelen medir entre 10 y 15 mm de longitud pero se han observado ejemplares con tallas de hasta 55 mm en las costas atlánticas europeas (Thompson & Brown, 1984). Esta especie tiene la morfología típica de la familia, con el cuerpo poco estilizado, los rinóforos cortos y los parápodos triangulares. La coloración general del cuerpo es verde oscura pero puede variar según la dieta del animal, pudiendo adquirir los ejemplares diferentes tonalidades verdes, pardas, rojizas o incluso ejemplares casi negros. Por todo el cuerpo aparecen puntuaciones rojas, rosadas, azules, amarillentas o verdes. En el dorso del animal existen venas marcadas que se juntan en la parte posterior de la región pericárdica, bastante hinchada y situada entre la base anterior de los parápodos. Los rinóforos son auriculados por su lado externo, son de color verde oscuro y pueden presentar cerca del ápice una mayor concentración de granulaciones coloreadas que le hacen adquirir una ligera irisación azul-violácea. El borde de los parápodos suele disponer de puntuaciones blanquecinas, que también pueden agruparse en los flancos del cuerpo y en los rinóforos. Estando el animal encogido, el borde de los parápodos puede presentarse lobulado. Los ojos, grandes y algo protuberantes, están situados en la base de los rinóforos en un área circular algo despigmentada. Las ramificaciones de la glándula digestiva pueden verse a través del tegumento en la cara interna de los parápodos, la cabeza y dentro de los rinóforos. El ano se encuentra en el extremo de una papila anal situada anterolateralmente, debajo del rinóforo derecho. El pie es estrecho y posee cortos tentáculos propodiales en su extremo anterior.
Biología
Esta especie es muy frecuente y vive en una amplia variedad de algas de las que se alimenta, como las clorofíceas Cladophora rupestris, Codium sp ., Enteromorpha clathrata, Ulva lactuca y Briopsis, rodofíceas como Chondrus sp , feofíceas como Cystoseira sp. y también se ha citado sobre la fanerógama marina Zostera sp . (Thompson, 1976; Bouchet , 1984; Schmekel, 1968), aunque se sospecha que posiblemente su espectro alimentario sea más estricto. En las costas ibéricas del Mediterráneo, casi siempre se encuentra sobre Codium fragile , de la que se alimenta y donde efectúa la puesta. Como otros sacoglosos, esta especie “secuestra” cloroplastos de las algas de las que se alimenta (fenómeno denominado cleptoplastia) y los incorpora a sus tejidos, donde permanecen activos realizando la fotosínteis durante varios días. La abundancia de estos cloroplastos en los tejidos del sacogloso es lo que determina la tonaliad verduzca de los ejemplares. Éstos, mantenidos en acuarios sin alimentarse van perdiendo progresivamente la coloración verde, que se va aclarando hasta adquirir una tonalidad amarillenta. E. víridis es capaz de segregar una mucosidad de carácter defensivo que tiene como principal componente a un polipropionato denominado «elisiona», que los animales sintetizan de novo , es decir que no provienen de la ingesta del alga que es su dieta (Marín & Ros, 2004). Las puestas de esta especie, que se depositan sobre las algas de las que se alimentan los animales, tienen forma de una espiral plana con huevos blancos de unas 70 micras de diámetro (Schmekel & Portmann, 1982).
Etimología
viridis = hace referencia a la tonalidad verde que presentan la mayoría de los ejemplares de esta especie, causada por los cloroplastos de las algas que ingieren y que se acumulan en sus tejidos.
Distribución
Elysia viridis tiene una amplia distibución geográfica y se ha citado en todas las costas europeas tanto atlánticas como mediterráneas, la costa atlántica de Marruecos, Canarias, Madeira, Azores e incluso el Mar Báltico. En la Península Ibérica ha sido recolectada en la totalidad de las áreas costeras, mientras que en Catalunya ha sido citada en numerosas localidades de la Costa Brava, el Maresme y en Cubelles. Según opina Bouchet (1984), es posible que algunas de la citas de esta especie se refieran a la espécie E. translucens , muy parecida morfológicamente a E. viridis .
