Descripción
Cuerpo algo cilindrico y alargado, con una concha interna y membranosa, dividido en un escudo cefálico anterior y una joroba visceral posterior, parcialmente cubierta por el manto. El escudo cefálico tiene el borde anterior más amplio y más o menos bilobulado, y suele cubrir los dos primeros tercios de la longitud total del cuerpo. Puede llegar a alcanzar una longitud máxima de 33 mm (Sammut & Perrone, 1998) pero el tamaño habitual está entre 10 y 20mm. El patrón de coloración puede ser muy variable: algunos ejemplares son de color negro aterciopelado o marrón oscuro con reflejos azulados, salpicado de puntos de color blanco dorado o anaranjado, mientras que otros ejemplares son de color marrón óxido con puntos amarillos muy finos. En cualquier caso, todos tienen una marca en forma de «W» en el borde anterior de la cabeza, así como una mancha de color blanco o crema en el extremo posterior del escudo cefálico, así como también tienen cinco puntos de color naranja en la parte anterior de la cabeza. Una serie de pelos sensoriales situadas en la parte anterior de la cabeza, más densas en dos prominencias situadas a los lados de la boca, le permiten detectar sus presas. Dos ojos redondos y negros pueden ser claramente visibles, o no, en el borde anterior de la cabeza, entre ambos lóbulos cefálicos. El pie se expande lateralmente en dos parapodios largos y simétricos, de forma arqueada y con una coloración similar a la del cuerpo, sin pigmentación blanca, y que se pliegan cubriendo parcialmente el dorso del animal. La parte inferior del pie también tiene un color similar. El manto tiene una fina línea blanca en el margen posterior, con un flagelo largo en el lado izquierdo y un flagelo corto en el lado derecho.
Biología
Según Marshall & Willan (1999) prefiere zonas arenosas con acumulaciones de restos de algas, desde el límite de la marea baja hasta profundidades de 20m. De costumbres nocturnas, se encuentra tanto en zonas protegidas como en zonas expuestas. En el Mediterráneo se ha encontrado muy raramente, por lo general en hábitats rocosos con poblaciones de algas hasta 12m de profundidad. Probablemente se alimenta de poliquetos o pequeñas planarias acelomadas que se supone que absorbe muy rápidamente. La puesta es un cordón irregular formando agrupaciones irregulares de pequeño tamaño. La cubierta pegajosa de los huevos puede captar detritus del entorno para su refuerzo y camuflaje. La eclosión tiene lugar al cabo de cuatro días (en condiciones de laboratorio).
Etimología
- Biuve, por la presencia de una marca con forma de «W» en la región cefálica. Del Latín «bi», dos y «uve» por la letra «v».
- Fulvipunctata. Del Latín «Fulvi», rubio, con pelo amarillo + «Punctata», del Francés “ponctuée”, del Latín “punctatus”, moteado, con puntos. Con puntos amarillos.
Distribución
Ampliamente distribuida por el Indo-Pacífico, pues está presente en Japón, Hawaii, Filipinas, Indonesia, Papua Nueva Guinea, Australia, Nueva Zelanda, Polinesia Francesa, Islas Marshall, Reunión, Vanuatu, Mexico, Sudáfrica y Mozambique. También está presente en el Mediterráneo, donde hay muy pocas citas confirmadas: puerto de Selimiye, Antalaya, Turquía como Chelidonura mediterranea (Swennen, 1961), Israel (Mienis and Gat, 1987), Malta (Perrone and Sammut, 1997), Chipre (Tsiakkiros and Zenetos, 2011), Italia (2015), Francia (Horst, 2015) y Menorca, Islas Baleares, España (Karachle et al., 2016), todas como Chelidonura fulvipunctata. Esta gran dispersión geográfica, junto con la gran diversidad de patrones cromáticos, sugiere que estamos delante de diversas especies dentro del mismo género, aunque hacen falta estudios moleculares para poder certificar esta hipótesis.
