Nota taxonómica: En la descripción de la especie hecha por Schmekel & Capellato (2001), los autores hacían referencia al único ejemplar estudiado anatómicamente, de 1,2 mm de largo (en vivo), con una fórmula radular de 3 x 1.0.1, que es considerada por los autores como la rádula rudimentaria de un juvenil. No encontraron ninguna concha interna ni pudieron recuperar ninguna placa gástrica después de tratar la muestra con NaOH. Estas características indujeron a Ortea (2013) a proponer la inclusión provisional de esta especie en el género Pseudoilbia dentro de la familia Ilbidae, que incluye especies del género Ilbia Burn, 1963 y Pseudoilbia Miller & Rudman, 1968 sin placas gástricas dentro de su tracto digestivo y con el segundo género también sin diente espinal. Los ejemplares estudiados por Araujo et al (2022) se caracterizaron por rasgos consistentes con la descripción original de R. avellana (sensu Schmekel & Cappellato, 2001), como la forma del cuerpo, la presencia de una marca redonda de color marrón en el centro de la cola, el patrón de coloración general, la ausencia de placas gástricas y la presencia de branquias, que los ejemplares recolectados en Roses (España) estaban situados a tan solo 45 km de la localidad tipo, y el hecho que dichos ejemplares se agrupan en los análisis filogenéticos entre otras especies del género Runcina, cuestionan la asignación realizada por Ortea (2013). Además, la falta de dientes raquídeos en R. avellana, informada por Schmekel y Cappellato (2001), podría ser un artefacto, ya que estos autores sólo estudiaron un espécimen aparentemente juvenil. Desafortunadamente, Araujo et al (2022) no lograron obtener la rádula de los ejemplares recolectados para su estudio, así que, de momento, en OPK preferimos mantener la especie R.avellana dentro del género Runcina hasta que nuevos estudios de otros ejemplares que puedan aparecer en el futuro permitan confirmar la inclusión en uno u otro género.

Descripción
Esta especie mide alrededor de 2 mm de longitud y tiene el cuerpo claramente alargado.  El nótum anterior es algo más estrecho que el pie y no diferencia lóbulos cefálicos mientras que  el extremo posterior es de contorno ovalado. El pie es de la misma anchura que el nótum excepto por delante, donde sobresale  ligeramente por los lados de la región cefálica, y por detrás, donde forma una cola corta y redondeada. La coloración es  marrón chocolate uniforme excepto las regiones anterior y lateral de la cabeza, algunas zonas del borde del nótum, el pie y la cola, que son más claros y semitransparentes. Los ojos son claramente visibles y están situados cerca del borde lateral de la región cefálica, en la zona más clara. El borde del pie tiene pequeñas manchas marrones en toda su longitud y la cola presenta una mancha más grande del mismo color, en forma de “Y” invertida. Schmekel & Capellato (2001) citan que sus ejemplares tenían una sola hoja branquial de forma redondeada.

Biología
De esta especie tan poco conocida se sabe que vive en rizomas de Posidonia oceanica, como otras especies del mismo género, y que también ha aparecido entre masas de algas como Codium vermilara (E. Madrenas, comunicación personal).

Etimología

  • Runcina. Del Latín “runcina”, cepillo de carpintero, útil que se emplea para alisar la superficie de la madera.
  • Avellana. Está relacionada con la ciudad de Avellino (Campania, Italia) que durante la dominación romana se llamaba “Abella” y que era conocida por sus avellanedos, cuyo fruto era llamado en Latín “avellana nux”, nuez de Abella. El fruto del avellano también era conocido en castellano antiguo como “avellina”. Hace referencia al color marrón chocolate del cuerpo de este opistobranquio, similar al de la avellana.

Distribución
Hasta la fecha, R. avellana sólo era conocida de la localidad de Banyuls-sur-mer, en las costas francesas del Mediterráneo occidental, gracias a la recolección de 3 ejemplares de 1, 1,2 y 1,5 mm de longitud en vivo. La aparición de un ejemplar entre algas en las Islas Medas (Costa Brava de Cataluña) significa la segunda cita de la especie a nivel global, seguidas de algunas muestras más obtenidas por nuestro grupo en la Bahía de Roses (España) y que se utilizaron en el estudio de Araujo et al (2022).
