Descripción
La longitud de los ejemplares adultos puede alcanzar los 20 mm. El cuerpo es estrecho y de color muy variable. Hay especímenes completamente pálidos (sin manchas anaranjadas o amarillas) y también ejemplares con manchas naranjas o amarillas difusas, sin embargo, nunca tienen marcas o rayas de color naranja o amarilla en la cola (típico de A. farrani ), pero sí pueden tener una línea media blanca en la cola. El dorso del cuerpo y los cerata pueden estar parcial o casi completamente cubiertos con grandes manchas grisáceas, marrones o negruzcas. Otros ejemplares pueden tener el cuerpo y los cerata completamente cubiertos de color anaranjado o amarillo dorado. Los rinóforos son lisos y miden de 1.5 a 2 veces más que los tentáculos orales. La parte superior de los rinóforos y los tentáculos orales aparece habitualmente cubierta de pigmento naranja o marrón amarillento, con pequeñas manchas blancas dispersas que nunca forman un anillo rosado; ocasionalmente, toda la superficie de los rinóforos y de los tentáculos orales aparece cubierta de un pigmento naranja amarillento o marrón. Hay 7-8 grupos de hasta 3 ceratas a lo largo de cada costado del cuerpo. Cada cera es relativamente larga y de aspecto inflado, con el extremo distal habitualmente cubierto de pigmento naranja o amarillo, que si está ausente permite ver el cnidosaco interior, pero nunca tienen un anillo subapical rosado, típico de A.viriola . El pie es estrecho, sin palpos ni angulos propodiales, y sin una línea blanca puntuada a lo largo de los bordes, típica de A.linensis .
Se puede separar de otras especies del género por los siguientes rasgos:
La ausencia de coloración naranja-amarilla en forma de manchas, presentes en A.farrani .
La presencia de formas con pigmentación de superficie oscura en el cuerpo y cerata, ausente en A.farrani .
La ausencia de una línea blanca punteada característica a lo largo del borde del pie, presente en A.linensis .
Menor número de filas de cerata y de forma roma, no apuntada como seria típico de A.linensis .
Mayor tamaño de las manchas dorsales (en las formas manchadas) que A.pallida.
Menor número de filas de cerata anteriores que A.pallida.
Biología
En la costa occidental de Suecia esta especie vive por debajo de la haloclina, pero en otras áreas se puede encontrar más cerca de la superfície o incluso en el intermareal. En el Mediterráneo se encuentra desde aguas poco profundas (0–0.5 m) hasta unos 20 m.
Etimología
Andra . De la palabra sueca que significa “segundo” o “el otro” referida a su separación de Amphorina viriola .
Distribución
Presente por todo el Mediterráneo y en todas las costas atlánticas europeas, desde Noruega a Gibraltar.
