Situados taxonómicamente dentro del grupo Mesoneura, los Rhodopoidea forman un grupo de babosas marinas, con categoría de superfamilia, que no tienen concha, tienen el cuerpo parecido al de un gusano, y son microscópicos. Viven entre los granos de arena de determinados fondos marinos. Su dieta es desconocida.

Los heterobranquios Mesopsámmicos son elementos clave para resolver las relaciones internas de los diferentes grupos de Heterobranchia, donde hay muchas posiciones sin resolver, filogenéticamente hablando. Determinados taxones clave, como los Rhodopemorpha y los Acteonimorpha aparentemente permitirán esclarecer los rasgos anatómicos clave que han llevado a la adaptación y diversificación de los Heterobranchia.

Con todo, se han realizado muy pocos estudios enfocados a la diversidad de los gastrópodos mesopsámicos (p.e. Arnaud et al. 1986; Neusser et al. 2021) y mucho menos en aguas del Mediterráneo (p.e. Poizat 1984; Jörger et al. 2010), Y entre estos trabajos hay muy pocos estudios de heterobranquios intersticiales vivos, aunque los rasgos vitales son esenciales cuando no se dispone de una concha para diferenciar especies.
