Descripción
Cuerpo relativamente corto y ancho. Adultos con una longitud total de unos 6 mm (Martín-Hervás et al., 2024). La coloración general del cuerpo es anaranjada, con papilas blancas opacas en los bordes de los parapodios. Los parapodios son grandes y se extienden hasta el extremo posterior del cuerpo, con bordes ondulados. También se presentan algunos puntos blancos dispersos en la cabeza y los lados de los parapodios. La glándula digestiva es visible a través de la piel como un pigmento verde oscuro. Los ojos son pequeños y están ubicados detrás de los rinóforos. Los rinóforos son relativamente largos, enrollados y del mismo color que el cuerpo. La zona pericárdica es pequeña con pequeñas manchas blancas brillantes. No se observa ramificación de los “vasos” dorsales. La suela del pie no está claramente delimitada y el extremo posterior del cuerpo es romo, sin una cola aparente.

Biología
Los especímenes utilizados para describir la especie se encontraron en la zona infralitoral a 6 m de profundidad. Su coloración naranja es única entre las especies de Elysia atlánticas, y posiblemente cumple una función críptica en su hábitat. La visibilidad de la glándula digestiva a través del cuerpo translúcido sugiere una dieta rica en algas verdes. Los parapodios probablemente desempeñan un papel en la respiración, facilitando el intercambio de gases a través de su delgada capa epitelial.

Etimología

  • Azorica. Se refiere al sitio de recolección donde se encontraron los especímenes originales (Ihla do Faial, Azores) y es un adjetivo femenino latino en concordancia de género con el género [sic].

Distribución
Hasta el momento, esta especie solo se conoce en las Azores (Atlántico nororiental), Praia de Porto Pim, Ihla do Faial. Se requiere más investigación de campo para determinar su rango de distribución y las posibles interacciones con especies simpátricas. Los especímenes mediterráneos, actualmente identificados como Elysia flava (una especie del Atlántico occidental), deberían compararse genéticamente con esta nueva especie.
