Nota taxonómica: Los análisis filogenéticos realizados por Cella et al. (2016) revelaron que la familia Tergipedidae tradicional es polifilética y pertenece a un clado monofilético mayor que incluye miembros de las familias tradicionales Eubranchidae, Fionidae y Calmidae; este fue un resultado inesperado, ya que la validez de estos taxones y su distinción de los Tergipedidae nunca había sido cuestionada antes. Se propone unir las familias Tergipedidae, Eubranchidae, Calmidae y Fionidae bajo el nombre de Fionidae. Esta decisión ha sido reinterpretada y completada en el trabajo de Korshunova et al. (2017) porque obviaba aspectos morfológicos y moleculares evidentes.
Descripción
El cuerpo de esta especie es delgado y alargado, terminando en la parte posterior en una cola relativamente corta. Las esquinas del pie son redondeadas. Los rinóforos son largos, lisos, con el extremo romo. Los tentáculos orales son cilíndricos y más cortos que los rinóforos. Los ojos son visibles a través de la piel justo en la base de los rinóforos. Las cerata son lisas, infladas y relativamente cortas, formando hasta 6 hileras oblicuas a ambos lados del dorso, su tamaño va disminuyendo hacia la cola. El color base del cuerpo es blanco translúcido con pequeñas manchas de color rojo-anaranjado y pequeñas motas de color amarillo opaco repartidas por todo el dorso y los costados. Los rinóforos y los tentáculos orales tienen la misma coloración que el cuerpo, así como un anillo rojo anaranjado en el tercio superior de su longitud. Las cerata también tienen el mismo color que el cuerpo. La glándula digestiva de color marrón puede ser observada por transparencia dentro de cada cerata, y un cnidosaco de color blanco hialino es visible en la punta de cada cerata. La zona subapical de cada cerata tiene un anillo de color blanco opaco, seguido de un anillo rojo anaranjado.
Sólo 3 especies de Eubranchus del Mediterráneo y Atlántico NE tienen el dorso con pigmentación roja, roja anaranjada o naranja. E. amazighi se pueden distinguir fácilmente de estas especies:
- Eubranchus farrani y E. linensis tienen manchas de color rojo anaranjado consistentemente mayores que las encontradas en E. amazighi, con la excepción de E. farrani en su forma «D» (Edmunds y Kress 1969), que tiene una pequeña mancha de color naranja en las cerata. Además, en E.farrani y E.linensis, esta coloración se limita a la superficie del cuerpo, mientras que en E. amazighi también se distribuye por los rinóforos, tentáculos orales y cerata.
- E.linensis tiene los rinóforos y los tentáculos orales de color blanco -con las puntas de color anaranjado en E. farrani- mientras que en E. amazighi los rinóforos y tentáculos orales están cubiertos con pequeñas motas de color amarillo opaco y manchas de color rojo-anaranjado.
- E.leopoldoi comparte algo de su apariencia externa con E. amazighi, pero el dorso de E. leopoldoi está densamente pigmentado con manchas de color carmín y tiene manchas blancas cerca de la inserción de las cerata, mientras que en E. amazighi las manchas de color rojo anaranjado y las pequeñas motas de color amarillo opaco sobre el dorso y cerata no están tan apretadas. Por otra parte, las cerata de E. leopoldoi tienen dos anillos subapicales que no se encuentran en E. amazighi: un anillo dorado alrededor del cnidosaco y un anillo azul brillante justo debajo de éste.
Biología
Se sabe muy poco de la biología de esta especie. Los dos únicos ejemplares conocidos se hallaron en el puerto de Agadir, Marruecos, a 5 m de profundidad sobre rocas artificiales. Probablemente se alimenta de hidrozoos, como hacen los otros Eubranchus.
Etimología
- Eubranchus, del Griego, significa “branquias verdaderas”.
- Amazighi, se refiere a la cultura Amazigh, que corresponde a la gente indígena del norte de África, desde Marruecos hasta el oeste del Valle del Nilo y desde el Mediterráneo hasta el norte del rio Níger. Se llaman a si mismos con alguna variante de la palabra i-Mazigh-en (singular: a-Mazigh), que posiblemente significa «pueblo libre» o «nobles hombres libres». Los extranjeros también los conocen como «bereberes».
Distribución
Hasta ahora, Eubranchus amazighi no ha sido encontrado en ningún lugar fuera de la costa atlántica de Marruecos.
