Descripción
Con una longitud de unos 15-20 mm, el cuerpo de color marrón rojizo presenta espículas y una cresta paleal estrecha con 16 apéndices simples, de los cuales los 4 anteriores son alargados, mientras que el resto son más cortos, todos del mismo color del cuerpo. Pequeñas áreas de los flancos, velo, cola, rinóforos, branquias y apéndices muestran un color rojizo más oscuro y hay manchas amarillas esparcidas por todo el cuerpo excepto en la superficie ventral del pie. También hay manchas blancas opacas esparcidas por los flancos, velo y cola, la cual muestra una línea media blanca desde las branquias hasta casi la punta. El velo frontal es ligeramente bilobulado. Los rinóforos, con 43 laminillas, son un poco más largos que los apéndices anteriores, todos ellos con puntas blancas hialinas. El penacho branquial tiene 11 branquias unipinnadas. Las espículas se encuentran dentro del tegumento y hasta las puntas de los apéndices del reborde palial. El poro genital se abre a la derecha del tercio anterior del cuerpo del animal.

Biología
Okenia aspersa se ha citado alimentándose de Ascidiella spp. (Thompson, 1964; Thompson & Brown, 1976; Todd, 1981) y Molgula spp. (Holt, 1891; Thompson & Brown, 1976; Just & Edmunds, 1985; Picton & Morrow, 1994; Valdés & Ortea, 1995).

Etimología

  • Okenia. Dedicado al Prof. Dr. Ludwig Gilbert Lorenz Oken, (1779-1851), filósofo natural aleman, editor de la revista “Isis” y publicador del libro “Lehrbuch der Naturgeschichte”.
  • Aspersa. Del Latín «aspersus», rociada, espolvoreada.

Distribución
Esta especie ha sido citada desde Noruega hasta el sur de Portugal, también en el Mediterráneo occidental donde se ha encontrado en Francia, Italia y Malta. La cita de Okenia ascidicola de Massachussetts, EE. UU. (Morse, 1972), que ahora se considera sinónima de O.aspersa, debería verificarse molecularmente.
