Descripción
Cuerpo de hasta 30mm, de color gris, crema o marrón, con grandes manchas ovaladas (formadas por un denso agregado de puntos) de color blanco amarillento en la cabeza, detrás de los rinóforos y en las áreas interceratales dorsales, también en los cerata. La zona cardíaca también es blanca, prominente y con la superficie ligeramente arrugada. Los rinóforos tienen una superficie granulada como una frambuesa y surgen de un único pedúnculo basal liso. Sus lados externos son algo cóncavos mientras que los internos son casi planos y presentan 11 anillos de 6-8 gránulos cada uno, de tamaño regular, de los cuales los dos anillos apicales y el mucrón son de color blanco amarillento, al igual que los dos gránulos centrales posteriores de cada anillo, originando una banda vertical blanca a lo largo de cada rinóforo; el resto de los gránulos son del mismo color que el cuerpo. Los tentáculos orales son largos y cilíndricos, truncados en su extremo, con la base del color del cuerpo y puntas doradas. Los cerata se contraen cuando el animal está en movimiento, por lo que parecen globosos, también con la base del color del cuerpo y la mitad superior y el ápice de color dorado. Cuando el animal está en reposo, la mitad inferior de los cerata se adelgaza y se estira, duplicando la extensión que tienen cuando el animal está en movimiento. Hay cinco grupos de cerata espaciados regularmente a cada lado del cuerpo. Los cerata más grandes se localizan en la parte anterior-superior del flanco y aumentan en número y disminuyen de tamaño hacia la parte inferior del flanco. El número de cerata en cada grupo es de: 15 (1º): 7 (2º): 7 (3º): 5 (4º) y 3 (5º). La abertura genital se encuentra por debajo del primer grupo de cerata, muy cerca de su base, mientras que el ano se encuentra en el primer grupo de cerata situado tras la zona cardíaca, en el lado derecho. El borde anterior del pie es redondeado y tiene dos ángulos de base amplia con la prolongación tentacular dirigida hacia atrás; la suela del pie es más ancha que el cuerpo y del mismo color que el cuerpo. La cola está formada por un adelgazamiento importante del cuerpo del animal detrás de los últimos cerata.
Biología
Vive en aguas poco profundas con fondo de algas y alto hidrodinamismo. Los cerata se balancean de lado a otro rítmicamente de una forma muy característica cuando el animal está en movimiento. El animal puede sostenerse sobre su delgada cola dejando el resto del cuerpo libre para sentir su entorno, elegir una dirección y moverse en ese sentido. También parece que el color marrón del cuerpo es causado por las zooxantelas contenidas en los conductos de la glándula digestiva, que se ramifica por las paredes del cuerpo.
Etimología
- Berghia. En honor del médico y malacólogo danés Dr. Rudolph Bergh, (1824-1909).
- Creutzbergi. Posiblemente en honor del Dr. Peter Hans Creutzberg, biólogo y cineasta de la naturaleza holandés que vivió en Colombia, donde recolectaba fósiles de moluscos.
Distribución
Citada en el Atlántico Occidental tropical, en Florida, Costa Rica, Venezuela, Cuba, Barbados, Bahamas, las islas Cayman, Curaçao, Brasil (Valdés et al., 2006; Carmona et al., 2014) y Panamà (Goodheart et al., 2016). También se ha citado en el Atlántico Oriental, en Tufia, Gran Canaria, España (Sabina López, Com.Pers.).
