Descripción
El tamaño de esta especie puede alcanzar los 14 mm pero generalmente los ejemplares son de menor tamaño. La coloración general del cuerpo es blanquecina o amarillenta y la glándula digestiva, que se ve por transparencia, es verde oliva. Esta se extiende bajo la casi totalidad de la superficie dorsal y por el interior de los cerata, dando al animal una apariencia olivácea. Una pigmentación blanco opaca se dispone en el ápice de los rinóforos y sobre el pericardio. Suele haber numerosos puntos blancos opacos en el dorso de los cerata que en el ápice conforman dos líneas blancas divergentes en forma de V. El ápice de los cerata es de color azul brillante, detalle éste que da nombre a la especie. Los rinóforos son digitiformes, alargados y lisos, de color verduzco en la base y blanquecinos en su extremo. El dorso esta cubierto de un gran número de cerata a ambos lados del animal que se mantienen muy apretados entre sí; la forma de los cerata varía desde fusiforme y puntiagudos en su ápice a inflados y redondeados en el mismo, dependiendo del estado de movimiento del animal. La papila anal es alargada y se sitúa sobre el pericardio. Los orificios genitales se encuentran justo detrás del rinóforo derecho. La cola es puntiaguda.

Biología
Ercolania coerulea se suele encontrar sobre el alga cladoforal Valonia utricularis de la que, según diversos autores, se alimenta. Su pequeño tamaño, forma globosa y color de los cerata hacen que pase inadvertida sobre el alga. La puesta de esta especie es un cordón circular aplastado con huevos blancos muy pequeños, de unas 60-70 mm de diámetro Su distribución batimétrica oscila desde la zona intermareal hasta los 20 m de profundidad.

Etimología

• Ercolania. Probablemente dedicado a Giovanni Batista Ercolani (1817-1883). Médico italiano y fundador de las ciencias veterinarias en Italia.
• Coerulea. Del Latin “caeruleus”, de color azul.

Distribución
Esta especie de sacogloso de descripción original mediterránea (Golfo de Nápoles) se ha citado en todo el Mediterráneo occidental y en el Adriático, en Canarias, Madeira, Azores, en el Atlántico occidental (Florida y Antillas), en las costas de Tanzania (Océano Índico) y hay citas de Hong Kong y Japón que requieren confirmación. En la Península Ibérica está citada sólo en las costas levantinas. En las costas catalanas se ha registrado u observado en contadas ocasiones en la Costa Brava.
