Nota taxonómica: Tras el estudio de Ghanimi et al. (2020) del complejo de especies de Berthella stellata, resulta que la especie conocida hasta ahora como Berthella plumula (Montagu, 1803) es en realidad un complejo de dos especies diferenciadas; el nombre B. plumula se mantiene para los ejemplares del Atlántico, mientras que el nombre Berthella perforata (Philippi, 1844) se propone para los ejemplares del Mediterráneo.

Descripción
Es una especie que puede llegar a medir unos 35 mm. La coloración general del cuerpo es blanquecina o amarillo pálido aunque se pueden encontrar animales de color anaranjado. En el centro del dorso se aprecian por transparencia las vísceras de color marrón claro. El manto es bastante aplanado y se caracteriza por tener un reticulado constituido por pequeñas depresiones de diferentes formas que son las que proporcionan el aspecto poroso al dorso. A la lupa binocular pueden observarse a través de la epidermis del manto numerosas espículas de tipo estrellado. La concha interna también puede visualizarse en la zona central del manto. El velo cefálico, los rinóforos, la banquia y el pie son blanquecinos o de color amarillento. La branquia está libre en aproximadamente un tercio de su longitud total y dispone de unas 20 laminillas a ambos lados del raquis central.

Biología
En las costas catalanas aparece esporádicamente en las inmersiones, bajo piedras a escasa profundidad o asociada a rizomas de Posidonia oceanica. El pie de esta especie tiene glándulas que pueden segegar secreciones defensivas de carácter ácido. Se conocen escasos datos acerca de la biología de esta especie, que podría alimentarse de esponjas o tunicados coloniales

Etimología

• Berthella. Probablemente dedicada a Sabin Berthelot (1794-1880), un naturalista francés que se enroló en la Marina y participó en las guerras napoleónicas. Vivió parte de su vida en las Islas Canarias, desempeñando el cargo de cónsul francés en Tenerife. La abreviatura “Berth” se emplea para indicar a Sabin Berthelot como autoridad en la descripción y clasificación científica de los vegetales. Escribió la Historia Natural de Canarias y dirigió el Jardín Botánico del Puerto de la Cruz.
• Plumula. De origen latino. El primer brote de una planta joven; el brote, o punto de crecimiento, del embrión de una planta.

Distribución
Esta especie habita en todas las costas atlánticas europeas. Los ejemplares mediterráneos han sido clasificados, después del trabajo de Ghanimi et al. (2020) como B.perforata. En la Península Ibérica ha sido observada y recolectada a lo largo de todo el litoral Atlántico, también en Madeira, las Azores y las islas Canarias.
