Placida dakariensis (Pruvot-Fol, 1953)
Placida dakariensis @ Gran Canaria by Mario Matute
WoRMS Taxonomic Information
Current accepted name: Placida dakariensis (Pruvot-Fol, 1953)
Current classification
Synonyms
- Hermaea dakariensis Pruvot-Fol, 1953
Description
Translucent white body with pale green branches of the digestive gland, without the superficial reddish pigmentation of other similar species. It has opaque white granules in the distal third of the rhinophores and cerata, as well as on the cardiac area. It has about 20 very elongated cerata on each side of the body, distributed in rows at 3 heights, forming a lateral band. The longest cerata are those located closest to the midline of the body. The digestive gland branches along the dorsum and rhinophores, penetrating the cerata without branching. Some specimens have blackish green spots on the inner surface of the cerata and on the dorsum. No branches of the digestive gland are observed in the cardiac area. The anus is located on a wide and short peduncle in front of the cardiac area, while the gonopore is located slightly behind and below the right eye. The rhinophores are cylindroconical, long and narrow, and are not auriculated. The anterior edge of the foot is widened and slightly bilobed, with a white sole, although the internal branched digestive gland can be seen by transparency when it is full.
Biology
The specimens collected were found on green algae of the genus Bryopsis Lamouroux, 1809, which it is believed to feed on. Details of its reproduction are not known. When moving, it carries its cerata obliquely to its body and sometimes crosses the longer ones over its back.
Similar species
- Placida viridis, because the digestive gland inside its cerata does not branch, but P. dakariensis does not have reddish pigmentation on the body, nor the two red bands on the sole of the foot, characteristic of P. viridis. The rhinophores are of different morphology.
- Placida dendritica and Placida verticillata, very similar coloration, but both have the digestive gland branched inside the cerata, which does not happen in P. dakariensis. The radular morphology is also different and allows them to be easily differentiated. The radular tooth is characteristic of P. dakariensis and allows it to be distinguished from other members of the family.
Etymology
- Placida. From Latin “placeō”, please, satisfy. Also means placid, gentle, quiet, still, calm, mild, peaceful.
- Dakariensis. Indicates the location where it was first described (Dakar, Senegal).
Distribution
Its known distribution area currently includes the Canary Islands and the coasts of Senegal.
