Taxonomic note: WoRMS defines this species as a synonym of Runcina ferruginea, however a recent molecular analysis (still unpublished) between specimens of R.ferruginea from the UK, and specimens of R.zavodniki from the coast of Croatia resulted in clearly different species (Jakov Prkić, pers.comm.).

Description
Very small in size, the maximum reported length is 3.5mm. The body is elongated and streamlined, coloured black, including the foot and the three gills. One individual was found to be pale orange-brown. Three pinnate gills were present, and each one bore regular pinnules on either face. No shell is present.

Biology
Several specimens were found among mixed algae (especially Ulva rigida) but many more were found among the rootlet system of the hydroid Eudendrium in the shallow sublittoral (down to 2 m). They look and behave like triclad turbellarians.

Etymology

• Runcina. From Latin “runcina”, carpenter’s plane, a tool used to smooth the wood’s surface.
• Zavodniki. In honour of Dr. D. Zavodnik, Director of the Rovinj Institute, Rovinj, Croatia.

Distribution
In Croatia it has been found in several localities, however, the species of this genus are poorly studied due to its small size and crypsis on the substrate they live on, so presumably they have a more general distribution.
