WoRMS Taxonomic Information
Current accepted name: Oxynoe viridis (Pease, 1861)
Current classification
Synonyms
- Lophocercus viridis Pease, 1861
- Oxynoe delicatula G. Nevill & H. Nevill, 1869
Taxonomic note
This species was originally described by Pease in 1861 under the name Lophocercus viridis, based on living specimens collected in shallow waters among seaweeds in Huaheine, part of the Tahitian archipelago in French Polynesia. The species was subsequently transferred to the genus Oxynoe, and a second name, Oxynoe delicatula (Nevill & Nevill, 1869), was later synonymized with it.
Description
Elongate-oval body with an elevated dorsal region and parapodial lobes that remain separate along the midline. The body is usually green in color, ranging from yellowish to olive tones, and shows considerable intraspecific variation. Specimens may exhibit a range of pigment patterns, including scattered large blue ocelli encircled in yellow or black, small brown or green spots, or white surface bumps. In some individuals, the parapodial margins bear thick white or yellow bands, often interrupted, and these may be overlaid with blue or purple reticulations. A reticulate yellow stripe may also extend from the rhinophores toward the anterior shell margin or terminate at the rhinophore base. The rhinophores themselves are smooth, matching the head coloration or displaying blue to purple spots or streaks. The head is smooth and bears grooved, truncated rhinophores. The oral lobes can be marked with blue or purple spots in some morphs. Parapodia are highly variable: some individuals are smooth, while others show scattered low bumps or numerous elongated papillae, especially along the parapodial edges, contributing to a hairy appearance. The papillae are typically pale yellow or white. The tail is narrow, more than twice the length of the shell, and tapers gradually to a rounded tip. It continues the color and pattern of the parapodia and may feature a median dorsal stripe and lateral bands composed of yellow lines punctuated with blue dots. As in other Oxynoidae, O. viridis has a fragile, translucent shell, largely hidden beneath the parapodia except at the anterior margin. The shell is thin, white, finely striated obliquely, and slightly convolute, with an inflated left side. The internal mantle tissue, visible through the shell, is golden brown and often bears large white spots and occasional ocelli ringed in yellow or blue. The aperture is broad and open, with a truncate posterior outer lip and a slightly callous inner lip.
Biology
It is typically found in shallow marine environments (0–10 m depth), living among dense beds of Caulerpa algae, where it feeds and its coloration provides excellent camouflage. Field and laboratory observations confirm that it feeds on a variety of species, including C. racemosa, C. scalpelliformis, C. serrulata, C. cupressoides, and other related taxa. Feeding behavior involves the coordinated use of two flap-like oral appendages to grasp algal filaments, which are then pierced by the radula to extract cytoplasmic contents without regurgitation. The emptied filament is released afterward. Mating behavior includes reciprocal copulation as described by Jensen (1999). The species lays flattened, coiled yellow egg ribbons consisting of 2–3 whorls, which are deposited on the surface of the host algae. Development of larvae is planktotrophic, with one embryo per capsule and no extra-capsular yolk. In laboratory conditions, larvae hatched within 4–7 days at 22 °C, with hatchling shell lengths ranging from approximately 112–119 µm. Such developmental traits suggest high dispersal capability, which correlates with the species’ broad biogeographic distribution, also facilitated by the animal’s ecological tolerance to a broad range of temperatures, approximately 12.8 °C to 29.2 °C. This species has several effective anti-predatory adaptations. When disturbed, it secretes a sticky, opaque white mucus, likely of chemical deterrent value. Also, in extreme situations, individuals may autotomize their muscular tail, which continues to writhe post-detachment. This serves as a predator distraction mechanism, after which the tail is eventually regenerated.
Etymology
- Viridis. From Latin “viridis”, green.
Distribution
Its native distribution range encompasses tropical and subtropical Indo-West-Pacific areas. Confirmed localities include South Africa, Sri Lanka, French Polynesia (including Mo’orea and the type locality of Huaheine), Japan (Okinawa), Guam, Philippines, Eastern Australia (New South Wales and Queensland) and New Zealand. More recently it has been reported from the Red Sea and also in the eastern Mediterranean, particularly along the coast of Türkiye (reports from Kaş area), but also in Dugi Otok Island (Božava, Croatia). These last mediterranean occurrences are considered non-indigenous introductions, most likely via Lessepsian migration through the Suez Canal.
