Flabellinidae

Flabellinidae are a family of aeolid nudibranchs, marine heterobranch gastropod molluscs with soft bodies and no external shell in the adult stage. They belong to Cladobranchia and the superfamily Aeolidioidea. It is a diverse group, with numerous genera and species distributed mainly in temperate and cold seas, although representatives also occur in other regions. The classification of the family has been revised in several phylogenetic studies, and its composition has changed compared with traditional classifications.

Flabellinidae mainly inhabit marine benthic environments, from very shallow waters to considerable depths. They are commonly found on rocky substrates, among algae and on sessile organisms, particularly hydrozoans and other cnidarians that may form part of their diet. Some species are closely associated with particular habitats or prey organisms. The family has a broad distribution and is particularly diverse in temperate and cold waters.

The body of Flabellinidae is usually elongated and relatively narrow, with numerous cerata arranged in lateral groups or rows. However, the shape, length and arrangement of these appendages can vary among different genera. In some lineages, the cerata are very long and numerous, whereas in others they are shorter or have a different arrangement. The rhinophores may also vary considerably and can be smooth, annulated, lamellate or display other forms of ornamentation. The oral tentacles are usually well developed.

The cerata have respiratory, digestive and defensive functions. Branches of the digestive gland extend into them and contribute to increasing the surface available for exchange processes. In many Flabellinidae, the cerata also contain cnidosacs, generally located in their distal regions, where nematocysts obtained from cnidarian prey are stored. These nematocysts can subsequently be used for defence against predators. The presence and development of this mechanism, however, may vary among different lineages.

The buccal apparatus retains a functional radula, generally consisting of a single row of teeth per transverse row. The shape and ornamentation of the teeth can vary among species and constitute important characters for identification. The jaws may also show different degrees of denticulation. The anatomy of the buccal apparatus, together with the morphology of the cerata, rhinophores and other structures, has been used to establish relationships among the different lineages within the family.

Feeding in Flabellinidae is predominantly carnivorous and is closely related to the sessile organisms that form part of their habitat. Many species feed on hydrozoans, but prey can vary among different lineages. These associations may be highly specific and, in some cases, a nudibranch species may be regularly found on a particular prey organism. The availability of suitable food organisms may therefore influence the local distribution and abundance of different species.

Colouration in Flabellinidae is highly variable. Some species have translucent bodies or subdued colours that facilitate camouflage among the organisms on which they live, whereas others display striking patterns. The cerata may differ in colour from the rest of the body and, in some species, their colouration may vary along their length. The colouration of the rhinophores, oral tentacles and cerata tips can provide useful characters for distinguishing morphologically similar species.

Reproduction follows the general pattern found in nudibranchs. Flabellinidae are simultaneous hermaphrodites and can exchange sperm during mating. After fertilisation, they deposit their egg masses on the substrate, usually in the form of ribbons or masses of eggs surrounded by gelatinous material. In many species, the egg masses are deposited close to the organisms on which they feed. Larval development may include a planktonic stage before settlement of the juveniles, although this process varies among species.

From an evolutionary perspective, Flabellinidae are particularly interesting because classifications based solely on external morphology have been modified by anatomical and molecular analyses. Some characters that may appear very similar externally have evolved independently in different lineages, whereas other anatomical features have helped establish the phylogenetic relationships among genera. For this reason, the limits of the family and the relationships among its internal lineages have been subject to revision.

It should therefore be kept in mind that not all Flabellinidae have exactly the same morphology or ecology. The shape and arrangement of the cerata, the structure of the rhinophores, the buccal apparatus, prey organisms and associated habitats can vary considerably among different lineages. This diversity is particularly important for species identification, since some external characters may be shared by evolutionarily distant species.

Flabellinidae therefore form a diverse group of aeolid nudibranchs, characterised particularly by the variety of their cerata, their defensive adaptations and their close relationships with benthic sessile organisms. Many species can easily go unnoticed because of their small size and their association with hydrozoans and other colonial organisms. Careful observation of the shape and arrangement of the cerata, rhinophores, colouration, habitat and potential prey is essential for reliable identification and for improving our understanding of their ecology and distribution.
