Nota taxonòmica : La classificació dels Flabellinidae semblava força estable fins que el 2017 van aparèixer una sèrie de treballs (Furfaro et al. 2017; Korshunova et al. 2017) que pretenien aclarir l´estatus de la família Flabellinidae. L´objectiu principal del treball de Furfaro et al. era caracteritzar molecularment les espècies mediterrànies mentre que el treball de Korshunova et al. pretenia aprofundir en les relacions filogenètiques entre diversos membres de la família Flabellinidae i les altres famílies dels aeolidacis. Tots dos treballs es basaven en la combinació de tècniques moleculars i morfològiques i, de fet, no ofereixen resultats molt diferents, però sí difereixen en la mida i procedència de les mostres estudiades i, sobretot, en la interpretació d´aquests resultats. Després de l´aparició del treball de Furfaro et al., moltes espècies Mediterrànies dels gèneres Calmella , Flabellina i Piseinotecus es van agrupar sota el gènere comú Flabellina , però van tenir determinats problemes amb algunes espècies que no encaixaven bé amb la classificació proposada (per exemple Flabellina babai ), van descobrir que les poblacions mediterrània i atlàntica de Flabellina ischitana corresponen a dues espècies críptiques diferents, i van constatar els problemes del grup críptic Calmella cavolini / Flabellina confusa / Piseinotecus gaditanus per la qual cosa van indicar la necessitat de fer nous estudis per aclarir el seu estatus. Curiosament aquests estudis s´estaven duent a terme pràcticament en paral·lel pel grup de Korshunova et al. però sobre una mostra d´espècies molt més àmplia i que comprenia exemplars de l´Àrtic, Atlàntic nord, oceà Pacífic i Índic. Aquest segon treball confirma la polifilia de la família Flabellinidae, però la seva forma d´interpretar els resultats representa una veritable revolució per a la taxonomia dels aeolidacis, especialment per a la família Flabellinidae. Tots dos treballs observen que hi ha dos clades (grups) ben diferenciats de Flabellinidae: el de Coryphella pedata i similars, amb cerata que surten directament del dors, i el de Flabellina affinis i similars, que tenen els cerata de cada grup pedunculats. Encara que Furfaro et al. consideren a les espècies de tots dos clades pertanyents al gènere Flabellina dins de la família Flabellinidae, Korshunova et al. diferència dues famílies: Coryphellidae i Flabellinidae sensu stricto, creant a més multitud de gèneres diferents en aquestes famílies per incloure a les espècies que estudien. La seva proposta taxonòmica, curiosament, dóna resposta als problemes trobats per Furfaro et al. En certa manera tots dos treballs es complementen, si bé en el treball de Korshunova et al. s´evidencia la manca d´estudis sobre les espècies de flabellinids tropicals i del sud d´Amèrica i Àfrica, de manera que encara no s´ha dit l´última paraula. La proposta de creació de nous gèneres per reunir petits grups d´espècies, en comptes de gèneres multiespecífics, sembla ser la tendència en alguns dels treballs filogenètics dels últims anys. Descripció
Els exemplars d’aquesta vistosa espècie poden aconseguir els 40 mm de longitud. El color del cos és blanc quelcom translúcid, amb una certa iridescència blava en el dors, cerata i palps orals. En alguns exemplars es pot observar una línia blanca opaca longitudinal a banda i banda del dors, just per sota de la base dels cerata que continua per davant a la regió cefàlica i per la cara externa dels palps orals. Aquests són llargs i de color blanc; els palps propodials són curts i estan solcats ventralment. Els dos rinòfors parteixen molt junts de la base, tenen nombroses laminetes molt atapeïdes i són de color blanc excepte la zona laminar superior que és de color taronja. Els ulls es troben a la base de cada rinòfor. Els cerata es troben agrupats en 7-10 grups a banda i banda del cos. Com en F. affinis , els cerata de cada grup surten d’una protuberància basal comuna, existint en cadascuna d’aquestes 4-5 cerata, sent el més extern el de menor grandària i el més intern el major. Els cerata són també de color blanc podent-se observar en el seu interior la glàndula digestiva com un cordó molt fi de color ataronjat molt suau; la zona subapical dels cerata és de color taronja intens que es va difuminant cap a la base. La punta dels cerata és afilada i en el seu interior es pot observar fàcilment el cnidosac de color blanc. El peu és així mateix blanc translúcid amb el marge de color blanc opac.
Biologia
Es tracta d’una espècie molt activa que freqüentment se l’observa passejant per fons rocosos i que malgrat la seva grandària i aparent vistositat no va ser descrita per a la ciència sinó fins a 1972 en aigües del golf de Nàpols, una de les zones més estudiades en el camp dels opistobranquis. Se l’ha associat amb diferents espècies de hidrozous (Campanularia, Eudendrium, Perigonimus=Bougainvilla ), però no és clar de si es tracta del seu aliment. La posta és un cordó d’uns 0.7 mm d’ample amb ous blancs.
Etimologia
Luisella , nombrada en honor de l’eminent experta en nudibranquis Luise Schmekel, que va descriure aquesta espècie, i autora de la famosa monografía “Opisthobranchia des Mittelmeeres”.
babai en honor de l’eminent malacòleg japonès Kikutaro Baba, mort el 2001 a l’edat de 94 anys.
Distribució
Malgrat lo recent de la seva descripció ha estat citada en tot el Mediterrani, des de les costes de Turquia a Croàcia, la Península italiana, la costa portuguesa, les costes andaluses i zona de l’Estret de Gibraltar. També en la costa de Dakar (Senegal). A Catalunya ha estat citada o observada a Llançà, Cadaqués, L´Escala i a Roses, entre altres localitats.
