Nota taxonòmica: Korshunova et al (2021) van publicar el seu treball sobre el complex
Polycera quadrilineata, on van identificar quatre espècies diferents a les costes atlàntiques europees basant-se en un enfocament multidisciplinar (molecular, morfològic, filogenètic, filogeogràfic i ecològic) per a la determinació d’espècies. En aquest treball, els autors van determinar que les cites de
Polycera faeroensis incloïen una altra espècie críptica (nova per a la ciència) que han anomenat
Polycera kernowensis, que es pot determinar fàcilment per la forma de l’estructura que protegeix les brànquies, un parell de processos laterals únics sense tubercles a
P. kernowensis, i un parell de lòbuls laterals en forma d’ala amb múltiples tubercles petits o extensions a
P. faeroensis. A més,
P. kernowensis sol tenir menys de nou apèndixs del vel frontal, mentre que
P. faeroensis té habitualment més de nou apèndixs frontals, entre altres diferències anatòmiques.
Descripció
Cos amb una longitud màxima de 20 mm, de color blanc translúcid, on s’aprecia per transparència la massa visceral. Té un vel frontal al cap amb fins a 9 processos cefàlics digitiformes de color groc. Els rinòfors tenen entre 14 i 15 laminetes amb un màxim documentat de 22 (Korshunova et al. 2021) amb els extrems de color groc. Les brànquies tenen entre 4 i 7 fulles blanques, unipinnades o parcialment multipinnades, amb els extrems també grocs. Les brànquies estan flanquejades per un sol lòbul, sense tubercles ni cap mena, de color blanc amb l’extrem distal groc. El peu és estret, de color blanc translúcid, amb una vora groga al final de la cua que s’uneix amb una banda groga migdorsal del mateix color. A la part anterior, el peu té una lleugera divisió al mig i dos tentacles propodials grocs, lleugerament engrossits, que formen una doble vora. Les taques oculars es troben al notus, darrere dels rinòfors, en una àrea de color més clar.
Biologia
Polycera kernowensis és freqüent en aigües poc profundes, ja que s’ha trobat de 8 a 30 m, en substrats pedregosos i fangosos. S’alimenta de briozous Bicellariella ciliata i Scrupocellaria spp.
Etimologia

- Polycera. Del Grec “polys”, molts + “keras”, banyes.
- Kernowensis, derivat de la antiga denominació de Cornwall, Anglaterra, on aquesta espècie és comú.
Distribució
Amb la localitat tipus al Regne Unit, també s’ha trobat als Països Baixos, al nord d’Espanya, Portugal i a la costa sud de la península Ibèrica, tant a la riba atlàntica com a la mediterrània.
